Inspect the Surface Condition
Observe the canvas for fine cracks, mesh-like cracks, loss of elasticity in the paint layer, and localized peeling-typical signs of aging.
Check if the canvas is generally yellowed or grayish, if the paint has oxidized and faded, powdered and flaked off, and if the substrate fibers have become brittle and crack easily with slight folding.
Verify Storage Conditions
If the canvas is exposed to excessive light, drastic temperature and humidity fluctuations, or a relative humidity consistently above 65%, the aging process will be significantly accelerated, and latent aging damage is highly likely to have already occurred.
