The core structure of hand-painted oil canvas consists of two parts: a base fabric and multiple functional coatings, possessing unique characteristics suitable for hand-painted creation.

 

Base Fabric Structure
Main materials are divided into four categories: linen, pure cotton, synthetic fibers, and cotton-linen blends. Among them, linen is the traditional first choice for hand-painting due to its strong fibers, dimensional stability, corrosion resistance, and resistance to mildew, ensuring the long-term preservation of the artwork without sagging or deformation.

Using a heavy-duty machine-woven process, the warp and weft threads are clearly defined, retaining a suitable natural texture, providing support for brushstrokes and adapting to different painting techniques.

 

Functional Coating Structure
Professional hand-painted oil canvases typically employ a three-layer coating structure, from the inside out:

Clear Coating Layer:40-60μm thick, used to seal the pores of the base fibers, preventing pigments and oils from directly penetrating and corroding the fabric.

Base Coating Layer: 80-120μm thick, mainly composed of titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, etc., giving the canvas a uniform white surface and optimizing color reproduction.

Topcoat: 120~180μm thick, controls the oil absorption rate of the fabric, improves pigment adhesion, and makes the artwork resistant to friction and easy to modify.

 

Core Structural Advantages

The overall structure achieves a balance of "strong support + controllable oil absorption + long-term durability," which can accommodate the expansion and contraction of the pigment layer to prevent cracking, and can maintain the flatness of the fabric surface for a long time, meeting the dual requirements of hand-painted creation and artwork collection.
