Identifying the Authenticity of the Material: Examine the warp and weft threads against a bright light. High-quality linen has uneven thread thickness, while cotton thread is even and neat. Break a thread; linen thread will have a clean break, while cotton thread will fork and bend. High-quality natural linen will have a light brown color with a natural sheen.
Checking the Weave and Backing Material: Stretch the canvas taut to check the weave density. High-quality canvas has no knots or sieve-like gaps. Bend a corner of the canvas; if there are no obvious whitening or cracking marks, and the backing material doesn't leave white powder when lightly scratched with a fingernail, it indicates a qualified backing material.
Testing Practicality: Place a drop of linseed oil on the back of the canvas. If the oil doesn't quickly penetrate after more than a minute, it indicates a dense canvas with even oil absorption. For the same material, choose a style weighing over 1kg and thicker than 1mm for greater durability. Check the compatibility details: Choose the texture according to your creative needs. Fine cloth is suitable for detailed depiction, while coarse cloth is suitable for thick painting. Avoid texture and style mismatch that will affect the final effect.
